(1)your virtual private network

Try these steps before calling for help ifconnection is having trouble connecting to the Internet at home.

1. Do you have an IP address? Try ipconfig / all. If you do not have an IP address, reboot your computer. If this does not work in the power cycle, reboot your computer after running your cable / DSL modem and routers and network devices. Make sure all your network cables are tightly plugged.

2. Check if your network adapter is active and packets are flowing after your PC restarts. Repeat ipconfic / all.

3. Check your link by pinging multiple web sites. If that doesn't work, just ping the loopback address 127.0.0.1. If it fails, your adapter may not function or it may not be configured correctly.

Verify your IP address. Enter ipconfig / all from the command line (as shown in the image) You should see an IP address and multiple DNS server addresses. Domain Name System (DNS) is the way in which Internet domain names are located and translated into IP addresses and required for web browsing.

Ping 127.0.0.1 - Loopback Test (as shown in figure). The loopback test is used to test whether the IP stack is responsive. If this is over, or if one or more of the following conditions are true, there may be a problem:

* TCP drivers crashed

* Network adapter not working

* Another service interfering with IP

Check your network adapter, click Start menu, Settings, Control Panel and select Network Connections. Double-click any local area connection or wireless adapter you use. Make sure its attached. If you have multiple network cards, disable the one you are not using.

Packets must be displayed on the sent and received counters. If the received counter is 0, check that the adapter has an IP address. Select Properties.

Click on the check boxes for the Show icon and notify me below. The dual PC icon appears in the lower right part of the taskbar in the tray area and blinks when sending and receiving packets. You can place your mouse over the icon to get the status and click on it for more details.

Tracerte shows the link path and the number of hops for the destination location. Each hop is a journey from one router to another. Tracerte is a simple tool for understanding where the problems are in the network and determining the delay between hops.

Ping is used to determine if the host is present and active on the network, and can determine the round trip time for the device. You can enter the host name or IP address if you know. If the request timed out, the host cannot be accessed because it is offline or there is a connection problem. Try multiple sites and if nothing works, ping the loopback address 127.0.0.1 Also, if your DNS is not working or configured correctly, you can only ping the host with an IP address and you will not be able to browse the web.

If you have intermittent problems, do a ping-d for 5 to 6 minutes, then press CTRL C to see the test results to determine if you are dropping network packets (lost packets). If you have, this usually indicates an ISP problem or a cable / DSL modem problem. Refer to the VPN ISP Troubleshooting Guide

(2) VPNError Messages

TroubleshootingQ1 Error Message: The remote host did not respond: or the remote server's IP address was not resolved

Cause: This indicates that the Connectivity VPN switch has never responded to the connection attempt. The problem may be with a switch switch (the switch may be down) or there may be a problem with the IP address on your computer.

Action: Try to bind your target name (example: VPN.something.com). If you receive a message saying "request timeout" from the ping command, call your ISP to make sure your DNS is working properly.

Q2 Error Message: Maximum Sessions Reached

Cause: This indicates that the maximum number of users are currently logged in for the account you are using.

Action: If you are the only user with a VPN in your account, this error can be obtained if you restart a link immediately after losing the dial-up connection to your ISP. This is because it takes up to an hour for you to log out of your account to determine if your connection has been dropped.

Q3 Error Message: Login failed, access the switch log for more information

Cause: The username or password for the entered username is invalid.

Action: Check that the username you entered is correct and then type the password again before attempting the link again.

Q4 Error Message: Physical connection lost

Cause: Your connection to your ISP has been terminated.

Action: Reinstall the connection with your ISP before establishing a connection to the remote network.

Q5 Error Message: Secure Reliability Connection Lost

This message can be caused by a number of different reasons, and there are several recommended actions to try to reconnect.

Cause (s): If the

client receives this error before connecting, something prevents the required port (such as ESP port 50). This can occur if your firewall is not configured correctly and controls the required port (s).

If you receive this error during the merger, you may notice one of the following:

1. Something closed the connection;

2. The VPN you tried to connect to, thinking that your customer was down or outdated.

3. Your local ISP has long blocked your network connection to the VPN conductivity switch to identify that your client is unresponsive;

4. The VPN connectivity switch you are connected to is disabled or the switch is no longer responding, or the device that does not support IPSEC NET traversal causes a connection failure.

Action (s):

1. Try to re-establish the contact link by clicking the link button. If this works, the connection may be lost due to the idle timeout configured on the contact VPN switch. For 15 minutes or more, the Conductivity VPN switch automatically disconnects the connection if no data is transferred through the contact link;

2. If you are unable to successfully restore the connection, the dial-up connection may prevent the data connection from traveling between the VPN client and the connectivity VPN switch. Stop and reconnect the dial-up connection before attempting to re-establish the connection with the Contivity VPN switch;

3. If you are still unable to connect to the Conductivity VPN switch, open a command prompt and try to ping the Conductivity VPN switch using the host name or address you specified in the target field.

(A) If you receive an "unreachable error", there is a routing problem in the ISP.

(B) If you receive a "Request Timeout" error message, the Contact VPN switch is not available and you must contact your network administrator.

4. If you are unable to receive and connect to this message regularly, it may indicate that the VPN switch is unable to communicate with the client, as it is behind some sort of NAT (Network Address Translation) device. NAT (Network Address Translation) Traversal allows multiple devices in a private network to access the Internet simultaneously without the need for its own external IP address. Most hotels and airports that provide internet connectivity use NAT to connect to the Internet.

Q6 Error Message: Cannot change the routing table

Cause: The message is that you tried to change the routing table by the user, the application on your computer or your ISP attempt to redirect the ICMB, it did not succeed. The client detects an attempt to make the change, determines that this is a security breach and closes the client’s connection. Any time you create a VPN connection, you cannot change the routing table because the VPN client sees this as a security risk and you are disconnected.

Some applications require ICMP redirection to work like a game or other third-party software.

Action: If you are unable to get this error due to an attempt to redirect the ICMP, close any other applications that you are using, which may result in an attempt to redirect the ICMP. If the ISP is doing this, you must block the ICMP routing request. You can identify the ICMM redirected by viewing a message that says the IP address routing table has changed.

Q7 Error Message: Getting Banner Text Info

Cause: If the message is you are experiencing a banner sock problem and you will see a window displaying the "Receive Banner Text" message, then disconnected.

Actions:

1. Disable the firewall completely to test. This is a port 500 problem and most likely you have a private firewall that blocks port 500 or you have a router that does not support IPSEC pass-through and you are connecting to a VPN switch that does not have NAT traversal enabled.

2. If using wireless, temporarily remove the wireless from the image and focus on the Ethernet card. Check the Ethernet card speed and dual parameters and make sure that the center, switch or router on the other end have the same parameters. Otherwise, the VPN connection will be dropped when the connection goes down, or due to a number of errors in the port from duplex and or speed mismatch.

3. Firewall blocking the connection, the system will crash. If you do not trust the IP address of a VSPN connection (which is very rare), NSDF (Norton Symantec Desktop Firewall) and NSPF (Norton Symantec Personal Firewall) can do this.

If you do not trust the VPN address of the VPN client, the firewall will crash you. In your web browser, click "Tools> Internet Options> Security> Trusted Sites> Sites" and add the target VPN address (s) to your trusted sites.
